Dr. Kristin Abbas hails from OH-IO (if you know you know) growing up the oldest of three girls in the other “Queen City,” Cincinnati. She knew at the age of 6 that she wanted to be a dentist. She knows this because she found a composition notebook from first grade where she made this proclamation, and also because she can hardly remember a time in her life where she envisioned an alternative career choice. Consequently, first grade was also the year she met and befriended her eventual husband Michael. Turns out, 6 was a pretty pivotal year for her.
Dr. Abbas attended Denison University, the tiniest of liberal arts colleges in central Ohio, where she spent her days singing in the Gospel Choir, serving as student council class president, playing rugby in the mud and attending chapter meetings at the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority house. In her spare time, she majored in Psychology and minored in Chemistry. She considers her background in psychology to be one of her most valued assets as it pertains to her ability to connect with people and to help her patients navigate the pervasive fear that prevents many from actualizing their oral health goals.
Upon graduation, Dr. Abbas traveled about 30 minutes west to the great city of Columbus to attend THE Ohio State University College of Dentistry (GO BUCKS!). During these four years, she grew to love patient engagement. People are her passion, and getting the opportunity to grow in a skill that would afford her the ability to service a community in a positive way, was truly a blessing. Dr. Abbas found herself enjoying a multitude of specialties in dentistry from orthodontics to oral surgery and everything in between. As a dentist, she enjoys the ability to offer comprehensive care to her patients.
On the day of her dental school graduation, Michael popped the question, and they moved back home to Cincy to start their lives together. Dr. Abbas spent the following 9 years in private practice, growing more in love with her career and finding a passion for cosmetic dentistry; employing modalities like Invisalign and ceramic restorations to create life changing smiles. During these sweet years in Cincinnati she enjoyed time surrounded by family and friends and was blessed by the birth of their first son, Oliver.
After a very fulfilling tenure in Ohio, the opportunity came to relocate to Charlotte and open a brewery with close childhood friends, a year later Protagonist Beer was born…and so was her second son, Graham. Dr. Abbas believes in the importance of continuing education and has spent the last couple years studying at the Engle Institute to expand her scope of practice to include implant dentistry. Dr. Abbas loves living in the city of Charlotte and feels a great pride in providing exceptional comprehensive dental care to those in and around her own neighborhood.
Dr. Kristin Abbas also takes the time to give back to those less fortunate and unable to afford dental care. He participates in the NC Medical Mission of Mercy outreaches, as well as providing free dental care for the ADA Jenkins Dental bus multiple times a month to help the local community. He volunteers at Veterans events serving those who have served our country, as well as traveled around the United States with Remote Area Medical trips to various areas to help those in need. Internationally, Dr. Kristin Abbas has been to the Dominican Republic and the Philippines on Medical Mission trips to provide care for those around the world who don’t have access to dental care.
As all of his siblings live in the Charlotte area, Dr. Kristin Abbas moved to North Carolina to be closer to family. He enjoys backpacking through National Parks, photography, hiking, traveling, and spending hot Carolina summers on the local lakes wake surfing.
Would describe herself as: A generally kind, loyal, goofy and outgoing control freak
Loves: Live music, coffee, silly comedies and basically anything with Will Ferrell, Ohio State Football, cooking, coffee, traveling, interior design, coffee, and more than anything...her husband and two boys.
On any given day, she can be found:
Checking out the latest coffee house, experimenting in the kitchen, plotting her next interior design project, catching up with friends, out exploring the ever growing restaurant scene in Charlotte or losing her mind in a house full of testosterone.
Why she loves being a Dentist: It’s the ability to fix something that’s broken. Utilizing a blend of science, medicine, art and engineering to create something tangible and valuable with her hands while connecting and building relationships with her patients and coworkers.
