Teeth Staining 101
Before we go into the details of teeth whitening, we think it’s important for patients to understand how teeth stain in the first place, and how to protect your smile, and maximize your results.
- Avoid staining agents – The biggest offenders are coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco, but as a general rule, anything that would stain a white shirt will stain your teeth.
- Oral hygiene – Regular brushing and flossing is important, as well as brushing after consuming any stain-causing foods or beverages.
- Rinse with water – When brushing is not an option, rinsing with water can drastically reduce the effects of staining agents on teeth.
- Sipping strategy – The longer the staining agent is in contact with teeth, the worse it will stain. So drink beverages quickly, and sip through a straw to avoid the teeth as best as possible.
The professional difference
While over the counter products, or products that you can pick up while shopping for groceries are fairly effective in removing surface stains, only a professional teeth whitening treatment with your Charlotte dentist, Dr. Berglass at Central Avenue Dental can remove those deep, intrinsic stains that give teeth their color.
